ABA-IPL Nominates Joseph M. Potenza to serve as Vice-Chair

The American Bar Association’s Section of Intellectual Property Law (ABA-IPL) is the largest intellectual property organization in the world and the oldest substantive Section of the ABA. The ABA-IPL has nominated Joseph M. Potenza to serve as Section Vice-Chair beginning in August of 2010. Confirmation will follow election results to be announced at the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, August 5-10, 2010.
Since 1894, the ABA-IPL has advanced the development and improvement of intellectual property laws and their fair and just administration. As the forum for rich perspectives and balanced insight on the full spectrum of intellectual property law, the Section serves as the ABA voice of intellectual property law—within the profession, before policy makers, and with the public.
The work of the ABA-IPL –through its eight Divisions and more than 60 committees– is the foundation and heart of its productive efforts as the largest and most influential organization of intellectual property lawyers in the world.
Mr. Potenza is the current Publications Officer and Chair of the Content Advisory Board. He served on the Section Council for four years and as Section Secretary for three years. Mr. Potenza is currently a member of the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, and has been a long-standing member of the ABA Standing Committee on Publishing Oversight where he continues to serve as a Special Advisor.
Previously, Mr. Potenza was Program Chair of the Annual Intellectual Property Law Conference and Co-Chair of the former Summer IPL Conference. He also served as Chair of Division VI – Litigation, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Related Issues, and the committees on Patent System Policy Planning, Public Information, Trial and Appellate Rules and Procedure, and Young Lawyers. Mr. Potenza is also a former Chair of the ABA Section of Science & Technology Law.
Mr. Potenza is a senior shareholder and practices in the Washington, DC office of Banner & Witcoff, Ltd.  He concentrates in litigation, Section 337 investigations at the United States International Trade Commission, licensing, counseling on patent and copyright matters, and the preparation and prosecution of patent and copyright applications.
Mr. Potenza will serve in this capacity for the term of one year. Following this role, Mr. Potenza will serve as Chair-Elect during the 2011-12 term and finally Chair during the 2012-13 term.
